Each entanglement composition begins with loose hand sketches of a group of forms. I find the outlines of this sketch and offset them multiple times to make a series of paths, and then break them up to eliminate "islands" to make them work as one-piece stencils. This transforms the original, simple sketch into something that takes on its own character, by virtue of the process. A formula that generates complexity.
For this set of pieces, I make a series of sketches - some (mostly) symmetrical, some loose and freeform - with minimal thought, and with no regard to the others in the same group. Then, I overlay the different patterns over each other to find complementary pairs that feel balanced, but have unplanned, exciting moments of interaction. These moments are the key to the entanglement series - a reflection of the way that all things are connected in our reality, often in unexpected ways.
Here, two sets of these patterns are chosen and then one each is painted on the front and back surfaces of the glass. The thickness of glass that separates the front and back layers makes a parallax effect. And. the front layer is applied lightly so as to be translucent, so the piece changes as the viewer moves past - the light conditions and angle of view creating unlimited variation.
