Each entanglement composition begins with a loose hand sketch of a group of forms. I find the outlines of the sketch and offset them to make a path, and then break them up to eliminate "islands" to make them work as one-piece stencils.

For this set of pieces, I made a series of sketches that are (mostly) symmetrical, and another group that are freeform, made with minimal thought, and with no regard to the others I'd already made. Then, I overlaid the different patterns over each other - one symmetrical, one not - to find complementary pairs that feel balanced, but have unplanned, exciting moments of interaction. These moments are the key to the entanglement series - a reflection of the way that all things are connected in our reality, often in unexpected ways.

Here, both the ordered pattern and the disordered pattern are offset twice, and I cut all four stencils out of acetate. Then I spray paint through each stencil, alternating light/dark/light/dark so the paths are intertwined. Each piece is a unique original painting - I reuse the stencil sets three times each, but each colorway is only used once and will never be reproduced.
