Each entanglement composition begins with a loose hand sketch of a group of forms. I find the outlines of the sketch and offset them to make a path, and then break them up to eliminate "islands" to make them work as one-piece stencils.

The composition of outlined paths takes on a different, unplanned character compared to the original sketch, and accidental moments of interest happen as a result of the technique. These moments are the key to the entanglement series - a reflection of the way that all things are connected in our reality, often in unexpected ways.

Here, the pattern is offset four times, and I cut four stencils out of acetate. Then I spray paint through each stencil, one after another. Each piece is a unique original painting - I reuse the stencil sets twice each, but each colorway is only used once and will never be reproduced.
